April 1996 Letter to President Albert Yates with Final Report
Dr. Albert C. Yates, President
Colorado State University
Fort Collins, CO 80523
Dear Dr. Yates,
Enclosed is a copy of the report of the Task Force on the Status of Women. The Task Force first met in Fall of 1994. The charge of the Task Force was to identify issues for women at Colorado State and to provide you with recommendations for addressing these issues. The Task Force reviewed the history of women at Colorado State, surveyed literature on women in academia, conducted focus groups throughout the campus community, and distributed a survey to all women employees and a random selection of women students. These efforts provided the data upon which we based the recommendations presented in this report.
The report is divided into three sections:
The Executive Summary is a synopsis of issues and recommendations that would be suitable for campus-wide distribution. Distributing this section is especially important because of the many women whose participation made the Task Force’s work meaningful, and who have frequently asked to be informed of the results.
Supporting Information contains more extensive descriptions of the issues and fuller discussion of rationales and recommendations.
The Appendices form the final section and include documents used or produced by the Task Force as well as additional analyses of data.
The Task Force members appreciate that an individual must take an active role in improving the quality of her or his own life. However, the University has the opportunity to play an important role in fostering an environment that encourages individuals to take the steps required to realize this improvement. We hope that the recommendations contained in this report will serve as an additional catalyst for Colorado State to cultivate an environment where women, and men, feel comfortable expressing their gender-related or culturally-influenced styles as they pursue their academic and professional goals.
thank you for providing the opportunity for us to substantiate the scope of women’s concerns at Colorado State. We appreciate your support and concern. We look forward to working with you on the implementation of the recommendations.
Respectfully submitted by
The Task Force on the Status of Women at Colorado State University
