Dear Tony,

I am delighted to present the annual report of the 2017-2018 President’s Commission on Women and Gender Equity.  In the last year, the Commission:

  • Celebrated its 20th anniversary
    • Resulted in learning about organizational change models in response to President Frank’s remarks at the Celebration about engaging in evidence-based change models to facilitate organizational advancement towards a culture of gender equity and best place for women to work.
    • No specific recommendations were developed, but the Commission was and has been ready to support whatever initiatives should come out of this endeavor.
  • Established small working groups from ideas proposed at the PCWGE Planning Retreat in Fall 2017.  These groups evaluated the following areas of concern: Alternatives for dispute to the existing grievance processes, Campus culture on gender and sexuality, Career Track/Advancement for Administration Professionals, Graduate students’ Healthcare and Affordable Housing, and Parental Experience.
    • Recommendations were developed for at least two of these concerns after taking an in-depth look at these areas and determining what CSU already had in place and whether gaps in coverage exist.  Further investigation that may be needed to fully understand potential gaps in areas such as alternatives to dispute.
  • The Standing Committee on the Status of Women Faculty had a productive year as well:
    • Investigated issues around parental leave policies and communication, strengthening the bullying policy, met with HR regarding supervisory training and what is in the training program, learn about organizational change models and discussed alternatives, investigated service load concerns identified in the qualitative study of climate for women faculty, lack of research/academic strengths in women studies, and investigated mentoring circles.
      • The Standing Committee will put forward recommendations to the Commission, which may or may not then be forwarded to you during their annual report and update meeting with you.

The Commission asks for your written feedback regarding its attached recommendations.  This written feedback will assist the Commission with tracking input and decisions, while improving their internal communications and processes.  The Commission is scheduled to meet with you on April 11, 2018 to discuss the recommendations and report.

The Commission thanks you for your continued support, empowerment, and leadership.  In addition, I would like to personally thank you for the opportunity to serve as interim chair for the Commission.
