2009 Recommendation for a Parental Leave Policy
TO: Dr. Tony Frank, Interim President
FROM: Dr. Carmen Menoni, Chair; Dr. Paola Malpezzi Price, Co-Chair
SUBJECT: Recommendation for a Parental Leave Policy
DATE: April 28, 2009
The Commission unanimously agrees that perceptions and cultural biases on parental leave generate difficult situations and choices, especially for women. Therefore, the Commission remains committed to the establishment of a gender-neutral parental leave policy that is uniform across all university units and that includes the following:
- Compensation that is competitive and uniform across the University;
- A centralized means of assisting departments in providing support for the continued professional development of the faculty member requesting leave;
- A centralized means of mitigating the impact of the requested leave on the department.
A well-defined and attractive parental leave policy, consistent with what many of our peer institutions offer, will positively impact the University’s ability to hire and retain new faculty and showcase CSU as a ‘family-friendly’ working institution.
CWGE has sought endorsement of this recommendation from Faculty Council, the CSU Benefits Committee and the Administrative Professional Council. Their response is pending.
