TO: President Tony Frank

FROM: Sue James on behalf of the President’s Commission on Women and Gender Equity

SUBJECT: Recommendation for a base budget for the Standing Committee on the Status of Women Faculty

Background

As a subcommittee of the Commission, the Standing Committee on the Status of Women Faculty relies on the Commission for many of its budgetary needs.  During FY15-16, the work of the Standing Committee required a large amount of financial resources and consumed over $20,000 of the Commission’s budget, received approximately $27,152 in additional support from the President’s and Provost’s Office and received a research grant of $21,959 from the Office of the Vice President for Research.

Recommendation

Because of the large amount of expenses the Standing Committee encountered during the FY15-16 year, the Commission would like to recommend that the Standing Committee on the Status of Women Faculty be given a base budget of $10,000 a year (this would be in addition/separate from the money already given to the Commission).  The Commission will still assist the Standing Committee financially when the $10,000 is exhausted.  We recommend the $10,000 be added to the Commission’s budget and at the beginning of each fiscal year, the Commission will allocate those funds to the Standing Committee on the Status of Women Faculty.  Should the Standing Committee on the Status of Women Faculty be unable to use all $10,000, the funding will become available to the Commission for use at the approval of the Chair of the Standing Committee on the Status of Women Faculty.

Promotes the Mission and Goals of the Commission

This recommendation allows additional funds to be given to the work of the Standing Committee on the Status of Women Faculty which solely aligns with the mission and goals of the Commission.  Having a consistent budget will enable more efficient budgetary and priority planning for both the Standing Committee on the Status of Women Faculty and the Commission.
